When Your Horse Needs Breaking...

Knowledge and experience are required to break your youngster

Richard Barrett's methods of horse breaking are based on traditional ways.

The horses are started by being mouthed with the key bits and are lunged with side reins. By using this method it teaches the horse to take up the proper contact on its mouth. When this is obtained we move on to long reining this teaches the horse to go forward being steered and stopped. Only when the horse is happily going forward with the saddle on being long reined do we then progress to sitting on it. The horse is then ridden away and taught the three basic paces (walk, trot and canter).

It is then when we recommend that the owner visits us to see how well the horse is going, they can then decide if they are happy with it's progress and if they require any further schooling. Richard has regular clients who send their horses for breaking.
